The City of Los Angeles, through the Stormwater Program, is legally bound to implement the mandates of a 1987 amendment to the Clean Water Act, the National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES) Permit.

The NPDES permit was first issued to the County of Los Angeles, the City of Los Angeles and the other eighty three incorporated cities within the County of Los Angeles by the Regional Water Quality Control Board in 1990. The Permit was renewed in 1996 for a second 5-year cycle and in December 2001 the Permit was renewed again for a third 5-year cycle.

• Adoption of LA County Permit anticipated at end of 2008 calendar year
