Raining Rhymes

Clouds gather

Pitter patter

Light flashes

Thunder cracks

Rainbow brilliance

Against black

The storm here in LA earlier this month reminded us that October is officially the beginning of the rainy season. To kick off the wet season, we’re celebrating with a Raining Rhymes Poetry Contest that will go until November 15. If you’re the creative type, then follow these simple instructions to enter our contest for a chance to win:

  1. Write an original poem about rain here in Los Angeles. It can be a simple Haiku about a gentle rain or a stream-of-consciousness poem about the angry LA River after a downpour. It can be a tongue-in-cheek rhyme about what happened one dark and stormy Los Angeles night or a fun (but keep it clean, please!) limerick about a crack of thunder that bolted you awake in the wee hours of a morning past. You get the idea!
  2. Write your poem in the comments section below and submit it by Friday, November 15, 2013.
  3. Share this poetry contest on Facebook and encourage your friends to write and submit their own poem about rain here in LA.

On November 20, we’ll announce the winner of our Raining Rhymes Poetry Contest. The winner will receive a $25 gift card to Barnes and Noble. After all we can think of no better way to spend a rainy evening than curled up with a good book, sipping a cup of hot tea.

Grab a pencil, a sheet of paper, your creativity and have some fun.

Hmmm…rain rhymes with drain…contain…pane…feign…

Thank you to Barnes and Noble for this promotion.

    Blue skies gone grey black.
Concrete smells wet. Drips drop dry
    on the hot white cement.

    Rainy clouds coming this way
Soft drops turning into large plops,
    Puddles filling up the drains
    Oh my goshes,
Have to look for my yellow umbrella
    to match my galoshes.

Here is a haiku to start the contest:

    rainbow in LA
    people in rush hour cars
    gaze up and ponder

    clouds hover, storm near
    thunder, lightning, rain falls down
    wash flower faces

    pinecone nest for seeds
spring life lies beneath soil layer

Will it rain, will it rain?
    Or are the clouds
    just a tease again?

All that free water up in the sky.
    Must use fates’ tricks
    To make raindrops fly.

Use the hose to wet the ground
    Where seeds are planted
    Now sprouts abound.

But time to use the real thing
    Go wash the car
That for sure the rain will bring.
