Gingerbread Houses With A Rainwater Twist

It’s time for some holiday fun – LA Stormwater style!

Last December, LA Stormwater staffer Mo English created a gingerbread house with her grandchildren and included a rainwater twist. Using black licorice for rain gutters and marshmallows for rain barrels, they crafted what we believe to be the world’s first gingerbread house that “harvests rainwater.” It was a big hit here at LA Stormwater as we were in the middle of working on LA’s historic low impact development ordinance, which was enacted earlier this year.

Mo’s creation inspired us, so this holiday season we’re challenging everyone to create a gingerbread house that harvests rainwater and then send us a photo. It will be entered into our first-ever Rainwater Harvesting Gingerbread House Contest. The winner of the contest will win a $25 gift card to Home Depot where one can find real rain barrels, pavers, and plants for a stormwater garden, all of which are great ways to begin harvesting rainwater at home.

Here’s how to get started:

  1. Craft a gingerbread house, incorporating one or more rainwater harvesting ideas into your creation. How about a licorice rain chain or a “train” of marshmallow rain barrels? How about a pervious walkway with candy pavers and grass made of green sprinkles or a stormwater garden using snipped gum drops? You get the idea!
  2. Take a photo of your rainwater harvesting gingerbread house and upload it below – please no files larger than 20 mb.  Remember to write a brief paragraph in the description section telling us how your gingerbread house harvests rainwater.
  3. Submit your photo and description by December 31, 2012.

Have fun and be creative with this! We can’t wait to see gingerbread houses that harvest rainwater and celebrate LA’s newly adopted low impact development ordinance. Like us on Facebook and you’ll be able to view the gingerbread houses. We’ll announce the winner on January 8, 2013 on Facebook.

Good luck to everyone!
