Pollution Solutions: Let’s Drive It Home!

It’s possible to lessen your environmental impact when driving your car by following these easy tips. As an added bonus, these tips will also help to reduce spending at the gas pump.

  1. Always have your wheels properly inflated. It is free to pump air into your tires at most gas stations and it only takes 10 minutes or less.
  2. Incorrectly shifting gears in a manual transmission can impact fuel economy as much as 1 to 2% of your MPG rating. Make a point of shifting smoothly.
  3. Take excess weight off your car. That cargo rack on the top of the car that you’re not using? Remove it to increase gas efficiency.
  4. Check and replace air filters regularly. Replacing your air filter equals a 10% improvement in gas mileage.
  5. When using A/C, keep it at a minimum to reduce gas mileage by 20%. When your car is idle or stuck in traffic, turn off the A/C and roll down the windows. Make sure a technician inspects the A/C system once a year.
  6. The best time to refill gas is before dawn or late at night to reduce evaporation caused by heat.
  7. Become a smooth driver without the sudden starts, stops and speeding up.  This will give you a 37% bump in gas efficiency.

Practice these seven habits to see your gas bill drop while lessening your environmental impact!
