Recycle Your Christmas Tree

The holiday festivities are now just a memory. The presents have all been opened. Friends and family are on their way home.

Now it’s time to begin thinking about taking down decorations and what to do with that Christmas tree. Fortunately, LA Sanitation allows you to recycle your tree free at your curbside. Here are a few tips to keep in mind:

  • Please remove all decorations, tinsel, garland and the stand.
  • Cut the tree in half (or better yet, into pieces) and place it in your green yard trimmings container.
  • If you are unable to cut it in half, simply place the tree at the curb next to the green container on your collection day. Collected Christmas trees will be recycled into compost and mulch.
  • If you live in an apartment, please place your Christmas tree at the curb on the day of collection by LA Sanitation and don’t forget to remove all ornaments, decorations, tinsel and the stand from the tree.
  • Flocked trees cannot be recycled. Cut the flocked tree into pieces and place it in your black container or place it at the curb.

Los Angeles Recreation & Park and Fire Station locations will accept Christmas trees for one day only on Sunday, January 6, 2013 between 9 a.m. and 4 p.m. A list of the locations where Christmas trees will be accepted can be found here.
