Celebrate and Clean Up on World Oceans Day
“Give me an “O”! Give me a “C”!
World Oceans Day is June 8 – a day when we celebrate our planet’s oceans and pledge to do more to keep them clean and sustainable. This year’s theme is Youth: the Next Wave for Change and organizers are encouraging everyone to reach out and engage young people who are the future of ocean conservation. To that end, this month in our events post, we are focusing completely on the many beach clean-ups taking place in June. Why not plan on participating in one of these clean-ups now that the kids are out of school? These volunteer opportunities are happening all along the Southern California coast and provide you with the perfect way to get involved – to celebrate and clean up the beaches along our part of the Pacific Ocean!
> Cabrillo Marine Aquarium kicks off June with their monthly beach clean-up on June 2. Join Aquarium staff and volunteers in maintaining the Cabrillo native garden and clearing the shore of debris.
> Ready to take your stand in the sand? On June 7, the Malibu Foundation for Environmental Education, in partnership with the California Coastal Commission, LA Stormwater Program and Keep Los Angeles Beautiful, presents its 19th annual Kids Ocean Day on Dockweiler Beach. More than 6,000 LA-area elementary students will be present to do a beach clean-up and create an environmental message in the sand. If you’re interested in volunteering, contact volunteer@kidsoceanday.org.
> Why not give your hands to Nothin’ but Sand? Heal the Bay’s June Nothin’ But Sand Beach Clean-Up takes place on June 16 at Venice Beach. This is a great opportunity for you and your friends to give something back to the ocean you love!
> Beach clean-ups are also happening down south! Save Our Beach conducts monthly beach clean-ups in Long Beach and Seal Beach. The Long Beach Clean-Up takes place on June 2. The Seal Beach Clean-Up will take place on June 16.
> Surfrider has two beach clean-ups planned for June. On June 2, they’ll be at Sunset Beach. On June 16, you can join them at Malibu. For more information, send an e-mail to bcu@surfriderwlam.org.
