It’s June and the City’s in Bloom, So Why Not Get Out & Volunteer?

It’s almost summer here in sunny Los Angeles, and that means a lot of us are getting excited about heading to the beach! We bet you wouldn’t be quite as excited if our beaches were always littered with debris, like plastic bags and soda cans.

Well, help ensure that our local waterways and beaches are as clean as can be by getting out to pick up a little trash. There’s also a few other ways to get involved, so check out a few of the upcoming events below!

> Wow! Saturday, June 4th is a seriously busy day for volunteering in Los Angeles. You have a number of really cool events to pick from. How about cleaning up trash with the Historic Highland Park Neighborhood Council? Or maybe participate in World Ocean Day with the Cabrillo Marine Aquarium? If that doesn’t entice you to get out, the 1st Annual Green City Fair will. Hey, even Ed Begley Jr. will be there!

> Sunday, June 5th will also bring in the green cheer. Hop on your bike for the 11th Annual LA River Ride with the LA Bicycle Coalition.

> On Sunday, June 12th join the Theodore Payne Foundation to “re-imagine” the California lawn.

> Sustainable Works will be hosting a Green Living Workshop on Tuesday, June 14th for some midweek fun.

> Join Heal the Bay’s Mark Gold on Thursday, June 16th in Santa Monica where the Los Angles Basin Section will be helping to get your mind IN the gutter with what is sure to be a great discussion about rainwater harvesting.

> On Saturday, June 18th Heal the Bay will be in Playa del Rey for a beach cleanup, TreePeople will be in Agoura Hills for a cool tree planting and the City of LA Department of Public Works will be hosting a Smart Gardening workshop in Downey.

> End the last weekend of the month off right by heading on down to San Pedro to “Discover Recycling” with the City of LA on Saturday, June 25th. Also on the docket for the last Saturday of the month is a tree care event in El Sereno hosted by TreePeople and a little habitat restoration with Friends of the Ballona Wetlands.

> If your weekends are too busy, there is also a weekly event in Coldwater Canyon, where TreePeople and volunteers are working hard to improve the park’s 45-acres. So come on out if you have the time!
