LA Stormwater Promotes Good Pet Practices

So what do our pups have to do with stormwater issues? Unfortunately, plenty. But fortunately, LA Stormwater has you covered with our pet program information.

What’s the connection between dogs and stormwater anyway? Well, when we don’t pick up after our furry friends, their waste can make its way into our storm drain system where it eventually travels untreated all the way to the ocean. That’s why the LA Stormwater program promotes proper disposal of dog waste: by picking up every time our dogs relieve themselves, we can make a big difference in the amount of pollutants that enter our ocean.

Dog waste often contains bacteria and other harmful viruses, which can spread debilitating gunk like canine distemper and canine parvovirus, both horrible disorders for the dogs that are afflicted. So picking up pet waste does not only improve environmental health of our waterways, it also reduces the chance that these diseases will spread from one animal to another.

If you haven’t yet signed up for our Pet eUpdates to keep you informed on our pet program, you can check your email preferences by entering your address here. Each issue is unique and we are certain that your dog will concur! Please visit our Pet Outreach Page for more info, as well as how you can score a FREE container of doggie waste bags!

Let LA Stormwater know if you can commit to picking up after your pet. We’d love to hear from you in the comment section below.

Picking up after your pet is a no brainer, but you can take it a step farther by emptying the the bag in a outhouse holding tank and then throwing the used bag in the trash. This allows the dog wast to be processed at a treatment plant and not end up in a landfill.
